Nederlands waterbedrijf wil water Ghana uitbaten
Er is een bijeenkomst belegd om informatie uit te wisselen over een dreigende overname van de watervoorziening in Ghana door het Nederlandse bedrijf Vitens.

Beste mensen,
Bij deze zijn jullie van harte uitgenodigd voor een NGO-bijeenkomst over het verzet tegen waterprivatisering in Ghana en over de plannen van Vitens (slands grootste waterbedrijf): op vrijdag 20 mei om 14.00 uur bij Both Ends (Nieuwe Keizersgracht 45, Amsterdam). De aanleiding is het bezoek aan Nederland van David Pessey van de Ghana National Coalition Against Privatization of Water (GhanaCAP). GhanaCAP verzet zich tegen de door de Wereldbank opgedrongen privatisering en pleit als alternatief voor het verbeteren van de publieke watervoorziening via democratische hervormingen. David Pessey is naar Nederland gekomen omdat GhanaCAP zeer bezorgd is over het bod van Vitens op de geprivatiseerde drinkwatervoorziening in Ghanese steden (i.s.m. twee drinkwater-bedrijven uit Zuid-Afrika, net als Vitens 100% publiek). GhanaCAP voert al enkele tijd campagne tegen de Franse water-multinationals Veolia en Saur, die net als Vitens een bod hebben een gedaan om de concessie op de distributie van drinkwater in Ghana in handen te
krijgen.
Voorafgaand aan de NGO-bijeenkomst heeft David samen met vertegenwoordigers van o.a. BothEnds en Transnational Institute een gesprek met Vitens op het hoofdkantoor in Apeldoorn (vrijdag 20 mei sochtends).

NGO meeting about Vitens & water privatisation in Ghana
Dear friends,
Herewith you are warmly invited to an NGO meeting about the resistance to water privatisation in Ghana and about the plans of Vitens (the countrys largest water company): Friday May 20th at 14 oclock at the offices of BothEnds (Nieuwe Keizersgracht 45, Amsterdam). Special guest will be David Pessey of the Ghana National Coalition Against Privatization of Water (GhanaCAP). GhanaCAP opposes the World Bank-driven privatisation plans and instead promotes the alternative of improving public water supply via democratic reforms. See also

David Pessey visits The Netherlands because GhanaCAP is concerned about the bid by Vitens to take over the drinking water supply in Ghanaian cities (in a joint venture with two South African public water utilities, like Vitens 100% public). GhanaCAP has already for some time campaigned against the French water multinationals Veolia and Saur who have also submitted a bid for the concession
to distribute drinking water in Ghana.
Before the NGO meeting, David Pessey together with representatives of BothEnds, Transnational Institute and other groups, will have a meeting with Vitens at their headquarters in Apeldoorn (in the morning of Friday May 20th).
