Piketty en de (in)stabiliteit van het economische systeem
(English version at bottom) Het zal niemand ontgaan zijn dat de Franse econoom Thomas Piketty een omvangrijke studie over het kapitalisme in de 21e eeuw heeft gepubliceerd, dat ontvangen is alsof het een nieuwe Das Kapital zou zijn. In november doet de schrijver Nederland aan, spreekt de Tweede Kamer toe en wordt in Paradiso ondervraagd door Joris Luyendijk. Maar nu de pil inmiddels goed gelezen is, zwelt ook de kritiek aan.
Waar Marx een fundamentele kritiek op de heersende economie losliet, lijkt Piketty ook een merkwaardig vertrouwen in de stabiliteit van dat systeem te hebben.Econoom Rodrigo Fernandez heeft het boek van een snijdende kritiek voorzien in zijn artikel “De Misplaatste Optimist“.
Hij verwijt de schrijver onder andere dat hij geen oog heeft voor de systematische crises, en geen verklaring geeft voor de oorzaken van de huidige crisis, zoals de overaccumultatie en financialisatie die de economie op dit moment overheerst.Real World Economics organiseert een serie avonden over actuele teksten over economie.
Op de eerste avond op 14 oktober staat Piketty centraal. Rodrigo Fernandez zal op de avond een inleiding geven, waarna de discussie onder de aanwezigen los kan barsten.

Piketty and the (in)stability of the economic system
The French economist Thomas Piketty and his book “Capital in the Twenty-First Century” has reached the limelight when commentor Paul Krugmann praised his study as a piece of “serious, discourse-changing scholarship”. Ever since, Piketty’s work has been widely discussed as an alleged challenger to Marx’ three volumes “Das Kapital”.
In November, Piketty will visit the Dutch Parliament and expose himself to an interrogation by Joris Luyendijk in the Paradiso in Amsterdam. However, alongside the ascendancy of Piketty, critique on his work is also on the rise.
Whereas Karl Marx offered a fundamental critique on capitalism, Piketty unequivocally beliefs in the stability of the capitalist system – likewise to many other of his fellow mainstream economists. Rodrigo Fernandez, Political Economist/Financial Geographer, criticises Piketty sharply in his review article “De misplaatste optimist” – The Misplaced Optimist. He accuses Piketty, amongst others, to ignore the inherent crisis tendencies of capitalism and the fact, that he offers no explanations for the root causes of the current crisis.
David Harvey has also offered a sublime critique on the flaws of Piketty’s work.
REAL WORLD ECONOMICS organizes a series of discussion evenings on pressing themes of political economy. The evening on “Piketty and the (in)stability of the economic system” will centre on the structural problem of overaccumulation and how this underpins processes of financialisation.
The event will take place on 14 October, at the Dokcafe, Plantage Doklaan 10, in Amsterdam, starting at 20.00 hours.
