Solidariteit met de Koerdische demonstranten!

Op vrijdag 3 december protesteerden ongeveer 100 mensen bij de OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) in Den Haag. Ze protesteerden tegen de inzet van chemische wapens in Zuid-Koerdistan (Noord-Irak) door het Turkse leger. De chemische wapens worden ingezet tegen de lokale bevolking en revolutionaire strijders in de Koerdische bergen. Ondanks het herhaaldelijk verzoek voor een onafhankelijk onderzoek naar het gebruik van chemische wapens door Turkije blijft het oorverdovend stil bij de OPCW.

Als een daad van burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid hebben die vrijdag rond de 50 demonstranten het gebouw van de OPCW korte tijd bezet. De politie reageerde met buitensporig veel geweld, waarbij 4 mensen het ziekenhuis in werden geslagen. De politie brak de arm van een demonstrant en van een ander werd een neus gebroken. 44 mensen werden opgepakt en enkele dagen vastgehouden. Zij zullen allen voor de rechter moeten verschijnen. Ook is iemand gedeporteerd naar het land waar diegene een asielvergunning heeft.

Vier van onze Koerdische kameraden zitten tot op heden in detentiecentra verspreid over Nederland. Zij zullen tenminste tot 23 februari zitten, de dag waarop de rechtszaak plaatsvindt. Dit zegt alles over het systematische racisme van de Nederlandse staat: witte activisten komen na vergelijkbare acties over het algemeen snel vrij. Wij veroordelen het buitensporige politiegeweld in naam van de Nederlandse staat en verzetten ons tegen deze belachelijke rechtszaken. De strijd tegen oorlogsmisdaden zou door iedereen gesteund moeten worden en zeker niet gecriminaliseerd. Iedereen heeft het recht om te demonstreren en er moet ook ruimte zijn om gehoord te worden.

Hoewel het ons niet verbaast (het OPCW wordt gefinancierd en staat onder toezicht van de NAVO waar Turkije onderdeel van is), kiest het OPCW ervoor om mensenrechtenschendingen te negeren. Maar ook de Nederlandse staat en de Europese unie zouden zichzelf moeten afvragen of het steunen van Turkije rechtvaardig is. Mede door de geopolitieke verhoudingen blijven Nederland en de Europese Unie samenwerken met de fascistische Turkse staat: ze gebruiken Turkije als bufferzone. Turkije stopt de vluchtelingenstroom naar de EU en laat vluchtelingen onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden in kampen leven. Wij blijven ons hiertegen verzetten!

Activisten door heel Europa hebben zich al uitgesproken tegen de repressie van de Koerdische demonstranten door de Nederlandse staat. Bij verschillende Nederlandse consulaten en ambassades werd geprotesteerd, waaronder in Londen, Brussel, Wenen, Bazel en Straatsburg. Ook zijn er solidariteits -statements en -foto’s gedeeld door activisten uit Duitsland, Catalonië, Galicië en de Philippijnen. We dragen een warm hart toe aan iedereen die internationale solidariteit in de praktijk brengt.

We eisen vrijspraak voor alle politieke gevangen en ondersteunen de eis van de OPCW-demonstranten voor een onafhankelijk onderzoek naar het gebruik van chemische wapens door Turkije.

We roepen op tot solidariteit in de actieweek van 2 januari tot 9 januari 2022! Zo willen we druk te zetten op de Nederlandse staat en de onderdrukking van de Koerdische kameraden onder de publieke aandacht te brengen.

Hoe kan jij actie ondernemen?
Maak een spandoek en hang deze uit het raam van je studentenkamer, kraakpand of andere zichtbare plek.
Organiseer een (spontane) demonstratie in je stad of dorp.
Schrijf brieven naar de politieke gevangenen.
Organiseer een demonstratie of actie bij gerelateerde instanties zoals het OPCW, Turkse of Nederlandse ambassades en consulaten.

Solidarity with Kurdish Protesters! Free them now! Action week from 02.01-09.01.2022!

Friday, 3rd December, around 100 people staged a demonstration at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague, Netherlands. They protested Turkey’s use of chemical weapons against the local population and Kurdish fighters in the mountains of South Kurdistan (North Iraq). Despite earlier requests for an independent research, the OPCW – who is the leading organization in prohibiting chemical weapons worldwide – remains silent.

As an act of civil disobedience, some protesters entered the building of the OPCW and shortly occupied its entry hall. The police repressed the protest violently: 4 people got injured (the police broke a protester’s arm and another’s nose), 44 people were detained and held for multiple days, all of the formerly detained protesters will be tried in court and one detainee has been extradited to their country of asylum. Four of our Kurdish comrades are still being held in custody in various locations in the Netherlands. This will last at least until their trial on the 23nd February, to us this signifies yet another act of systemic racism in The Netherlands: white activists are usually being released quickly after similar direct actions. We oppose this ridiculous court case and the violent behaviour of the Dutch state. Further, the fight against war crimes should be supported instead of criminalized. The Netherlands and the European Union should reconsider their cooperation with the Turkish state and leave space for the right to protest.

Instead, the EU continues its cooperation with the fascist Turkish state. The OPCW continues to ignore fundamental human rights violations, which is most likely due to the fact that the OPCW is financed and controlled by NATO states including Turkey. Further, it is also of strategical significance for NATO, the EU and its member states since Turkey functions as a bouncer for the European Union. Turkey stops refugees attempting to enter the EU and makes them live under horrific conditions. We will continue our fight until this stops.

Activists throughout Europe have denounced the harsh repression of the Kurdish protesters by the Dutch state. Demonstrations in solidarity with the protesters were staged at multiple Dutch consulates, embassies and other important landmarks, including those in London, Brussels, Vienna, Basel and Strasbourg. In addition, messages of solidarity were sent by activists from Germany, Catalonia, Galicia and the Philippines. We embrace this spirit of international solidarity and salute everyone who took part in these actions.

We demand the immediate release of the protesters and all charges to be dropped. In addition, we support the initial demand of the protesters for an independent investigation by the OPCW into the use of chemical weapons by Turkey.

Finally, we call on everyone to do solidarity actions in an action week from 02.01 to 09.01.2022 to pressure the Dutch government and creating awareness for our comrades. How can you take action?

– Organize a demo or do actions at related institutions (OPCW, Police Station, Turkish or Dutch embassy/consulate)
